The “Credit Report” for Your Health: What Insurers See That You Don’t

The “Credit Report” for Your Health: What Insurers See That You Don’t

Most people know to check their credit report regularly because it can affect everything from buying a home to getting a new credit card. What you may not know is that a similar report exists for your health—and insurance companies use it behind the scenes when you apply for coverage. It’s called Milliman IntelliScript, and in many ways, it works like a “credit report for your health.” Just as your credit history can impact borrowing, this report can influence the coverage and rates you’re offered for life, disability, or health insurance.

What Is Milliman IntelliScript?

When you apply for life, disability, or health insurance, the company examines your health history—but they don’t start from scratch. Many of them use Milliman IntelliScript to get a snapshot of your prescription history, and they make assumptions about your health from that record.

Here’s how it works: IntelliScript compiles your prescription records from pharmacy benefit managers and other databases and provides them to insurers in an easy-to-read report. For example, if you’ve been prescribed medication for high blood pressure or diabetes, that may show up in the report. Insurers use this information to confirm your medical history and determine coverage terms without having to rely on slower processes like lab work or medical exams.

Just like a credit report, IntelliScript is a behind-the-scenes record that can influence financial outcomes—only in this case, it relates to your health and insurance.

How to Review Your IntelliScript Report

Your IntelliScript report is part of your broader financial picture, and as such, it’s important to review it periodically. Errors do happen—sometimes prescriptions are recorded incorrectly or linked to the wrong person. Just as a mistake on your credit report could impact your ability to get a loan, mistakes here could affect important insurance decisions.

Knowing what’s in your report also helps you prepare for the future. If you’re applying for new coverage—whether life, disability, or long-term care—your prescription history may raise questions. For example, if the report shows long-term use of a certain medication, be ready to explain the context, especially if it no longer reflects your current health.

You’re entitled to a free copy of your IntelliScript report each year, just as you are with your credit report. You can request it online at rxhistories.com or by calling (877) 211-4816.

Once you have your report, review it carefully. Check for outdated prescriptions, medications you never took, or entries that don’t belong to you. If you spot errors, you can dispute them with Milliman.

Taking Control of the Process

At the end of the day, financial planning is about being proactive. You wouldn’t wait for a loan denial to check your credit score, and the same principle applies here. By reviewing your IntelliScript report before you apply for new coverage, you reduce surprises, correct mistakes, and ensure that you’re presenting the most accurate picture of your health history.

Insurance companies may see IntelliScript as just another underwriting tool, but for you, it’s an opportunity to take control of your personal data and make sure your financial foundation is built on accurate information.
